FWIW TT ended up in the latest futures pool on 8/1. So that opportunity is over and nay-sayers can look forward to another prospect to diss. Those who may have taken a chance can worry about his health, points, and progression for the next two months. Yep, the 1st Saturday in May falls on the 13th this year.
Outliers
From Europe and specifically Ireland, Cairo (IRE) the son of Quality Road out of a mare descended from Galileo owned by Magnier and trained by O'Brien. I suppose this one is doubtful for a Kentucky appearance but seemingly has the endurance genes necessary to prevail at a mile and a quarter, unlike most U.S. Bred horses.
The UAE Derby and its points perenially produce a KD entry of dubious distinction. Last year's winner Crown Prince (JPN), it c/b argued, indirectly produced a big winner in the big dance. That one ended up winning million+ for the year. I don't know who's shipping in this year for the easy $ and points but I expect trainer Doug O'Neil to try again and probably another soup can? from Japan.
Speaking of which the leading candidate from the land of SONY (i.e. Standard Oil of New York) looks to be the appropriately named Derma Sotogake (literally inner layer of skin - outside leg trip [sumo]). this one is sired by the New York-bred five-time stakes-winning Mind Your Biscuits. What a wonderful world.
For those in Todd, we don't trust in the Kentucky Derby this year is wide open hooray. For those who don't think Pletcher's Derby record is relevant and final-time-based speed figures earned at middle distances are, then this year's 3/1 on Forte is a gift. As I understand it they are gonna still run the remaining preps and BBB will probably debut a 1st-time starter in one of them who, after winning, will go on to Churchill Downs via proxy.
