Wait, this isn't his first foray into the doping scene, is it? I seem to recall one or two or a dozen other stories like this (Merneith, Gamine and the aptly-named Charlatan come to mind.) Each one taking place after he had already been caught before. I believe there is ample evidence that he is, in fact, stupid. Criminals aren't known for their immense ability to stop themselves from c

I can't believe anyone would buy the "he isn't stupid" defense. Yes, he is. He's cheated even after being caught cheating. That sounds pretty stupid to me.

From a Bloodhorse article last year about the new gate:
"The horse breaking from the inside post will break farther away from the rail this year, as will the horse on the far outside relative to the outer rail, Jordan said. This is due to the length of the gate being shorter than the two other gates combined while also considering the gap between the two.
The interior of the stalls are

Good to see some life coming back to the board with a more normal triple crown trail ahead this year. I came across this stat I saved from Jerry in my old research and wondered if anyone has info to fill in the more recent years. It deals with horses that have run a negative figure at any time in their life leading up to the Derby and where they finish. Seems pretty important this year since I th

To your point about no one else having 2 9f preps. Stanford, Frosted and Mr. Z all have run twice at that distance (also Mubtaahij, as you noted already).
I look at Frosted's chart and the only issue I see is the one you raise about the surgery not lasting more than one race. If it holds, I see him being a big contender at a very big price.

Danzig Moon. Should be no problem getting the distance. Wasn't any match for Carpe Diem but did go from 3 1/2 back at the 1/8 pole to beaten by 3 so has the staying power.

No Storm Cat descendant has ever won the Derby. Many have run second (Menifee, Lion Heart, Bluegrass Cat, Ice Box, Bodemeister and, most recently, Commanding Curve).
Storm Cat had 8 runners last year and 3 of them finished in the last four spots.
Six horses in the 2013 Derby were Storm Cat's and four held down the last four positions.
Eight more ran in 2012 and five wound up in the

Prior to the Wood the consensus opinion was that Verrazano was a FREAK. So what changed? The speed in his race blows it out of the gate & everyone is left to jog around the track. Even with a paceless race he still holds on & wins.
Everyone thinks there may not be much pace in the Derby this year. I'm sorry but there is always an honest pace in the Derby. With 20 horses trying to

I can't watch the replay of the Withers & agree with this sentiment. The horse was on the rail & buried the entire time, tried to get going a couple of times, was last hitting the top of the stretch and still ended up moving in & out of horses to get up at the wire. For me I think it's the race that taught Revolutionary how he needs to run to win the Derby.
Also, the hor

The first story I've seen about the Kentucky Derby in the "mainstream" sports media. Is it about an undefeated Verrazano? Nope. Maybe it's about Winstar, Borel & Pletcher together again? Nah. Could it be about doping and the cloud of cheating that hangs over the sport? Ding ding ding

To make your example a little more appropriate, it's like a high school kid swimming times that are the best in his district, then changing coaches and immediately beginning to compete with Michael Phelps.
If we're way off base with how much cheating we think is going on vs what's actually going on then I don't believe the blame for that should be placed on our shoulders. H

I'd like to see what opinions folks have, there could be 4 runners from this race in the Derby field if Golden Soul makes it to the gate. It appears that this was one of the better prep races of the season and I feel like Palace Malice was the best horse and without running into the wall of horses, would have beaten a horse that is on top of many people's lists, Revolutionary. Don't know if this is a private party but I'll throw in an opinion from a fan who is completely uneducated as to the doping aspect of horse racing.
I watch every sport there is. In every one of them there are participants who are willing to bend (and break) the rules to gain an advantage. MLB, NFL, even NASCAR...all have humans whom make the decision to put their own health at risk

Would it be too selfish to think that if Jim makes it to the Derby with Falling Sky I'll lose one of my major pieces of handicapping research? I mean if Mr. Covello is riding the whirlwind that is Derby week, how can he tell me everything I need to know about how each horse looks in the mornings!?
In all seriousness, good luck to Falling Sky on Saturday! I'd love to be able to watch

File under "Not That Anyone Cares". My picks today in the two major preps:
In SA I like:
Super Ninety-Nine (speed horse, Baffert & Garcia!),
Flashback (I think the move to Gomez will give a more even distribution of energy here)
Power Broker (Hasn't raced in 5 months but a strong, steady workout regimen for Baffert, Bejarano stays on & he put up a good number on

So let me get this straight...some of you want to allow a filly to run with the boys without proving she can run with the boys? I don't see the issue with asking a filly to run in a race like the SA or FL Derby to earn the points required to make the KD.
If the filly is the star that some are using in their examples then she should have no trouble earning the necessary points.

Jim,
It seems some in the thread mistook "not fully cranked" for "dialed down". I, and Steve, know the difference.

From Haskins. Seems he at least agrees with Jim that Orb won't be "fully cranked" on Saturday.
"No pressure on him at all in the Florida Derby. He already has enough projected points and with his style of running, he only needs to be closing at the end to set him up for the Derby. If he wins, fine. Knowing McGaughey, he’s more interested in having him peak on the first Satu

Are we really complaining that the winner of the Spiral or Sunland didn't beat anyone to "earn" their spot in the Derby while also complaining that the Illinois Derby winner doesn't get in? The Illinois Derby hasn't produced a Derby winner since War Emblem yet the Spiral gave us Animal Kingdom. Now I'm sure once the IL Derby is included into the points system we'
