Re: Question for the board - 10 years ago
"You're going to have a hard time convincing me that he had enough pedigree to win the Derby but not the Belmont." Damn my eyes but isn't that what just happened? And by your figures he ran a 0 in the Derby which stacks up favorably to any "better bred" Derby winner in the post steroid era. To boot, his nicking pattern is A++.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Question for the board - 10 years ago
Agree with Moss. Also, with wins in the derby and the Preakness, CC had more than outrun his backyard pedigree. To boot, his Belmont was a very good performance considering his troubled position early, his wide trip late and third effort in 5 weeks. Hats off to him. He's dead game. Expect to hear more from him down the road. Hopefully nothing more from the owner.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Question for the board - 10 years ago
Yes. They race rode him into a position where he was clearly not comfortable. They did the same thing to Big Brown. Victor should have used him enough early to secure clear sailing although they probably would have then just strung him out to the outside rail.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: When to toss? - 10 years ago
Wish I'd had the brains to bet it. I keyed the 1, 4, 8 & 11 in triples. Didn't touch the exacta. Duh.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: When to toss? - 10 years ago
I know. But the early fractions are so slow in the Belmont, unlike some Derbies and most Preaknesses, that the deep closers are right up on the pace. If they're not, it's probably just not their day.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: When to toss? - 10 years ago
There really aren't any deep closers in the Belmont anymore. The pace is so slow they're all bunched up.by jerry - Ask the Experts

I got that you don't think they're the same but I don't think you've made a convincing case for why you think they are not.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
I'm saying it is. I just don't understand why you think it should be treated any differently than the other equipment I mentioned.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: When to toss? - 10 years ago
The Belmont is a peculiar case with its own set of rules partly due to the distance and partly due to the spacing of the races leading up to it. Rule of Thumb 1. The Belmont is generally not kind to horses coming out of the Preakness and is especially unkind to horses who run tops in the Preakness. Rule of Thumb 2. Slower horses are not necessarily automatic tosses. Horses jump up in thisby jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
Couple of things. First, he used the strip in his November race with no improvement so the jump up was second time nasal strip. Second, even if it is the reason for his improvement, how is using a nasal strip to keep soft nasal tissue from collapsing which can happen with horses during strenuous exercise any different from using a circle 8 nose band, tongue tie or special bit to keep theby jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: The Belmont - 10 years ago
Great race. Gritty performances from most right down to General A Rod who looked to be a threat at the top of the lane. Brilliant performance from Chrome considering he didn't have the easiest of trips. He's a special horse. Those guys should feel blessed. Hoping after Steve patches things up with his wife he'll get around to making some kind of apology to the rest of the world forby jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: CC grabbed a quarter in race: DRF - 10 years ago
He ran a great race considering he raced down inside horses for the first half, a place he isn't comfortable, and he was 4 wide around the 2nd turn. He was still trying at the end. The horse is all heart. His owner(s) need some schooling. They should feel blessed to have such a modestly bred yet extremely special horse. He took them father than they had any right imagining. Hope an apology iby jerry - Ask the Experts

The Belmont - 10 years ago
Much better record redboarding but here goes. MC - Fast enough; training well on dirt; pair or off; use in top spot CCh - New tops in the Preakness spell trouble for the Belmont. Off to X still puts him in possible 0 range. No value in him pairing; play to X. Matterhorn - Lone race at 2 good; limited schedule at 3. Maybe small forward move; light use in bottom of super. CCu - End of the linby jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Mott enters Matuszak, Smith to ride - 10 years ago
Don't agree with most of what you said but, for me, his appeal comes from his only race at 2. Obviously has talent. Hasn't quite put it together this year with limited starts. Not looking for big top today and haven't heard he training so brilliantly. I prefer Commissioner for the big jump up today.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Belmont day thoughts - 10 years ago
The Belmont is the best wagering race so far this year. Chrome is a huge underlay and very beatable.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Belmont day thoughts - 10 years ago
One of the angles I get from the archives is a new top at Pimlico spells trouble at Belmont. That's a knock against both the favorite and ROC and probably GAR as well considering how he was stopped, shuffled back and came again, his Preakness was probably an effort.by jerry - Ask the Experts

Awfully frothy talk considering more horse have lost the triple crown than have won it.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
In addition to War Emblem, Orb jumped forward 6 1/2 points and held it together for 3 races. Mine That Bird jumped up 6 1/4 points and backed it up in the Preakness. Street Sense, 7 points.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
Sure. War Emblem jumped forward 7+ points and stayed there for 4 races, the first 2 of those while still under Springer's care.by jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
I was thinking of War Emblem but he was transferred to Baffert. Although wasn't that after his jump up in the Illinois Derby?by jerry - Ask the Experts

Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
Really. Soft palette displacement? "Dorsal displacement of the soft palate is a disorder of the upper airway in horses. It is one of the most common upper airway obstructions, and it causes poor performance and abnormal noise while exercising." "Initial treatment for intermittent DDSP often involves equipment changes and a conservative approach. Tack such as a figure-8 nosebby jerry - Ask the Experts
Re: Don't discount a Secretariat like performance Saturday - 10 years ago
Who knows? Who cares? Racing permits all kinds of optional race day equipment. I assume they're intended to enhance the horses performance. Why not nasal strips?by jerry - Ask the Experts
