I think that I had the wrong race...Bob said it was Secretariat's Derby...which is probably the right one.

Well, it's all speculation, isn't it? Who knows?
As for the claim that horses can be killed by it, I think that that could be true, but like everything else, it probably depends upon the continuity of use.
It would be time consuming, but interesting to study a given trainer's pattern of racing horses off layoffs. If they wanted to use a drug like EPO for a series of races and t

Your post brought back a memory of the Bayakoa-Go For Wand Distaff.
I was there that day. Lousy seats in the upper grandstand at the head of the stretch. Or so I thought until the disaster.
Bear in mind that GFW had had a tremendous season, hardly ever being headed in her series of races leading up to the BC. She was a dominant filly.
As they ran down the backstretch Bayakoa was tracking he

You are right about Secretariat.
You are right about Easy Goer's Belmont.
But the fact is that Secretariat may be the only horse who won a Classic, which is what I mentioned, running successively faster quarters.
As for the Florida horse who picked up speed through a race, he was trained by my trainer...he's a great guy...and he does not drug 'em.

Interesting thought...you are probably right, but I can't understand why the guy has taken a dive in recent years...

Someone on this tree said that a rebreak is a sign of a good competitive horse and that is correct.
To understand it in visual terms look closely at a horse who has been on the pace or pressing it, who reaches the head of the lane in company, and actually appears to accelerate as if he just left the gate. He separates himself from his company just at that point and seems to draw off. He is act

My point was simply this: FC was not rebreaking in the race, just running on gamely....he appeared to be gaining because EM was slowing....so I don't disagree with you, I am just not impressed with what FC did in that race.
If you are right about EM, then we might throw both of them out.

Yeah and Jimmy Croll raced Holy Bull against Cigar the following year at Gulfstream(to collect an appearance fee) on a leg with a filling, taking the chance that it wouldn't break the horse down.
Of course, that's one that he couldn't use as an excuse for losing.

Interesting insight...many thanks....could it be that the guy in Florida had a volume discount? He sure claimed and won with a ton of horses.
Just kidding. The real bottom line for me isn't about betting. It's about the chance that ANY owner has competing against these people.
One of the Florida guy's horses ran my best horse into the ground and it left a very bad taste in

I think that everyone on this tree is right in a way...but this horse may very well be an EPO horse...if this is the case, (this is an honest question, not a challenge) is there a chance that he can move forward through the numbers without any backsliding? At least, until the negative effects of the EPO kick in?

Really doubt it...his comeback was an optical illusion...he might pair up, but EM was just toying with him...imagine what EM's number could have been if Bailey asked him at the head of the lane...then imagine EM pairing up THAT number in the Derby.

Re: EPO - 21 years ago
Oops..wrote an answer and then seemed to delete it. Let me start again.
When I got involved in racing in the sixties the greatest trainers of the time might win 20% if they had a good meeting, but rarely did anyone win 30%, year in and out...in fact I don't think anyone ever did for very long.
Since this EPO thing got started, however, 30% has become commonplace for a growing list of trai

EPO - 21 years ago
Horses will run in this Derby that are on EPO. This is a relatively recent development in performance enhancing drugs ... maybe three or four years old. The question: does this effect the animals Thorograph numbers, race to race? I believe that it probably does and I also believe that there are at least two runners in this Derby who have exhibited all the traits of an EPO laced winner...they c
