FYI - there's a piece on drugs in racing on the latest Real Sports on HBO. I just caught the last 5 minutes of it - highly critical of the sport.

I wonder how much they lost a couple of years ago when they couldn't get BC forms out in time due to Sandy. You'd think they'd have a backup plan for events like that.

I knew Rags was useless a number of years ago when a horse named Borrego got a faster Rag # for finishing something like 9th in the BC Classic at Belmont than he got for winning the JC Gold Cup by a pole.

My liking ML is not due to Pletch but due to that quarter-point move forward in his last, which sometimes leads directly to large forward moves. Most notably a Shug filly a few years ago who had a similar move forward in the Spinster and then blew the doors off Ashado and others by 10 lengths at 30-1 in the BC Distaff. I'm still kicking myself for missing that one. And now if Pletch horse

I liked Master Lightning in the Sir Barton Sat. before today's results. I like him even more now.

Gato's trainer at the time, Eddie Gregson, was a completely different type of trainer. He insisted on doing things his way, and if the owner complained, he'd fire them and tell them to take their horses elsewhere. Only trainer I've ever heard of that fired owners.

Off the top of my head, it's happened twice. Gato Del Sol (trainer didn't think it was in the best interest of the horse), and Spend A Buck (they went chasing after a bigger purse in the Jersey Derby).

I also like the top selection. But not so much after seeing the jockey's Path statistic. Awful. Javerre's not getting anywhere near a rail trip, even from Post 2, with this rider.

The Derby DQ was 1984 (the one derby I've attended) - Gate Dancer was DQed from 4th to 5th for lugging in on Fali Time.

I looked it up - Winning Colors finished 2nd in a filly stake race at SA before the SA Oaks & SA Derby

My 1st trip to L.A. in 1983, someone bet $100k to show on the Erin's Isle/Exploded entry in the 6-horse Hol Gold Cup. They finished 4th & 5th. And someone bet $100k to show on Groovy in the BC Sprint at SA. He was 4th. I think there may have been other cases like that in SoCal, but I can't recall details. I know bridge jumpers did poorly there in the 80's/early 90's,

I've previously heard that, in case Hol closed, they would expand Los Alamitos to a 1-mile track and put in a turf course. Also heard that Pegram is one of the owners of Los Al. Makes sense if it happens - Los Al is in Orange County, a big market with lots of well-off folks. Short-term, SA & Dmr will both apply for extra dates.

Augusta approves all announcers. A few years ago , on a Masters telecast, Gary McCord said the greens were so fast it looked like they were coated with bikini wax. He also said the mounds in the greens looked suspiciously like body bags were buried underneath. That was the last Masters he ever worked.

I, for some reason, still have the SI story you're referring to. Dated 11/6/78. A race-fixer named Tony Ciulla claimed to have bribed several top jockeys in the Northeast to hold horses in the trifecta races. He named Cordero, Velasquez, Baeza, Vasquez, among others. At the time of the article, the case was under investigation by authorities, so I don't know the outcome.

This reminds me of what happened a number of years ago in SoCal. A public handicapper named Aaron Hess started a column in Today's Racing Digest where he listed his observations of physical conditions of horses based on what he saw in the walking ring and after the races. Ex.- Horse A has a bad knee, Horse B looked lame coming out of his last race, etc. Some trainers got really angry with

Also Gato del Sol. Rested him for the Belmont 5 weeks later. But he got smoked by a horse who won the Met Mile by 7 lenghts 5 days earlier. Funny game at times.

Jerry - I've sworn off prescription drugs. Haven't had one since 1983. I've gotten into the natural health movement. But that's a whole other story.
I go back and forth on the lasix issue. There's pros and cons for me. And that's partly why I started this thread in the 1st place - to have us talking about this stuff. I'd rather solutions come from us th

My problem with lasix, as well as bute, is that when they were first proposed for legalization, the argument for them was that they would enable horses to run more often. Before any drugs were legalized, horses ran on average about 10 times a year. Now it's down to about 6. And I have yet to hear a single person in the industry argue that horses today are healthier, stronger, and more dur

So are you saying that the rest of the planet (Europe, Japan, etc) that don't allow lasix are all fools and we're the only ones who know what we're doing?

So what are you saying? Those who want to clean up the sport are dead wrong? We should keep things just the way they are - there's no drug problems in the sport? She went into a lot of subjects besides just lasix - is she wrong on all of her other points?

A new group called Clean Horse Racing posted on their Facebook page a 9-page letter sent by Sheila Lyons, DVM to Gov. Cuomo regarding lasix and drugs and how the sport should be managed. Since I don't know how to do it, I'm hoping someone can find this and post it here for all to read and comment on. I'd want to hear Jerry's opinion on this. Thanks, Ken
