Gotta hand it to Navarro. He told Maggie on air BEFORE the race that is the best horse he's ever trained. Haven't seen too many like that one in 50 or so years in racing. Wouldn't surprise me if that was the fastest number ever for a three-year-old sprinter.

No big surprise here.
I'm still bummed about the Haskell. Not sure Gusto would have ever gone by, but a ground-saving ride into the first turn might have made the difference. There won't be a rematch though.
How about the dude who won the pick 6 yesterday at Saratoga? He was alive to every horse in the last leg with a $480 ticket. Started with 2 singles. Well played. For me

i really don't think we need to defend mike smith in million dollar races unless 'jerry' above hasn't followed racing for the last 15 or so years
baffert kills me--the greatest trainer of dirt horses in history and he insists on using riders like talamo. i got killed yesterday but i also feel bad for the horse, that was supposed to be his big breakout
how do you even go

He's a nightmare. Baffert is so stubborn. Smith was around without a mount--can you imagine that???

Talamo - 4 years ago
When Baffert said before the race he was leaving it up to Talamo as to tactics, I knew that wasn't going to end well. What the hell was he doing going so wide into the first turn? That dude is dumb as a pile of rocks. All in all, Max ran terrific; I got to hand it to Servis. He's the king for sure. I'd say Max redeemed himself, and he's the top 3 year old so far. On to the Tra

118 DEGREE HEAT INDEX
this is going to be interesting
I posted my take, and I like Joevi, but his issue is he doesn't have a high enough cruising speed and he hasn't shown the ability to close. I think this is a bad race flow for him. He's not fast enough to go with the other speeds in here.
I see a change in Mucho Gusto. I think he's really matured and really ready fo

Note: Heat index of 118 degrees/PETA standing by to condemn the sport of kings and queens should anything gruesome occur on national TV--first of all I pray everyone horse and human comes out alive and unharmed.
THE RACE
I think Max is beatable though betting against Servis is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute; you're hoping for the best which often doesn't pan out.

Closed Saturday, yet the forecast is pretty much the same today through Sunday??? Monmouth is now expecting upper 90s on Haskell day. Something doesn't add up???

The forecast changed at bit. First they were saying sea breezes and only upper 80s. Now that doesn't look right, mid to upper 90s! I'm really not sure. Del Mar is looking better and better

all races off the turf
as for scratches, you'll have to find a tarot card reader because NYRA ain't talking--good luck to all

Yesterday they ended the card with a 3 horse field. What makes it even worse is they don't announce scratches-changes until right before the race. They take the race off the turf hours before; you know there will be a lot of scratches, yet they won't announce them. And in case you were thinking California will be better, Del Mar is banning Jerry Hollendorfer, just in case you hadn'

Yes, for sure. He ran fine in both turf starts, perhaps even improving some yesterday. The only thing is Pletcher runners don't tend to get much better with age, and usually what they run first or second back off a layoff is the limit. Could see him use his speed very effectively in some Saratoga allowance races for sure. He is what he is. I'd play him with with an inside draw at the SP

Their strategy was to save all the good racing for one day. I think that's a horrible slap in the face to everyday players, but it is what it is. They've had mostly garbage cards for the entire Belmont meeting so far; worst I've ever seen (for Belmont) in 40+ years of betting NYRA races--so,let's enjoy Saturday and hopefully make some cash.

Baffert unveiled a potential superstar yesterday (Race 4); the Goldolphin braintrust thought this one might be their elusive Derby winner, but he got hurt over the winter. Comical Ghost seriously reminds me of Arrogate. Keep an eye out for him, and I think the one he dueled with, Tilted Towers (D'Amato), who's bred on the same cross as a few you might remember, namely Rachel Alexandra a

1-war of will--i don't think he likes being inside; he was pulling hard and rank in the derby, even before the infamous incident. i'm not his biggest fan, but he wouldn't shock me either, given the relative mediocrity of the field. i'll probably use him in a protective manner in multi race exotics

Heard Jersey scuttlebutt to the effect that he may be finished. Going for x-rays? Can't confirm this in any news outlet. I'm wondering if he'll ever get his Haskell redemption. Hard to believe a horse who ran once as two year old and had only one route race going into the Derby, trained by a performance enhancing master, is physically destroyed by the rigors of the triple crown.

Immediately after the Derby and the objections lodged, Jason Servis went on national TV saying, he was leaving it all up to the "racing gods." Does anyone else see the irony in all that?
