Richie, thank you for offering your usual erudition together with a soupçon of wit. Once you mentioned the word "science" my mind went into operational shutdown, so I have nothing to add nor subtract from your musings.
On another sports-themed message board, I was prompted to do some research on the NCAA, which as an oversight organization rivals many of the most inept political an

It's possible to create a more dysfunctional system than thoroughbred horse racing, but it would take a considerable amount of work. You have competing, and often poorly managed, tracks, state governments and the breeding industry, all stirring the pot. That's a formula that would screw up a once-a-week church bingo night. Brings to mind the phrase, "We have met the enemy and he

Since no one of lowly poster status appears to be in the room where it happens, speculation of motivation will be rife, none of it favorable to NYRA, and not without some justification. For some of us of a cynical bent (probably 99% of those who post here), blame will comfortably gravitate to those NYRA decisions-makers who will throw out the baby with the bathwater if they can't wring ever

I'm at a loss to make an analogy of the experience of Finger Lakes racing to Saratoga, but a good horse is a good horse. The names in the article are not unknown to me, and in fact, I was a regular patron of the bowling alley owned by one of Fio Rito's owners. Their bartender is now one of the track's leading trainers.
Reading that Fit Rito broke through the gate makes his w

I thought you were reporting the score of a round you played at Saratoga National. But, this is a pretty big deal, too.

I don't think too much can be extrapolated from the Saratoga meet to the state of the game, overall. We all know its unique appeal. Its success in terms of attendance and overall handle do not obviate other management issues. The concerns that it might dilute the overall charm and unique historical cachet of the track are legitimate, but it will take a concerted effort of ineptitude on the

Tavasco, I can't help but think that your inference is that the "little TV gal" was remiss in not asking a more pointed question about the horse's "surprising" performance. Well, I'm afraid the "nievete" arrow is pointing at you if you think any broadcaster, male or female, big or little, is going to ask the kind of question that you think was begging

And as I like to say, the best primers on how things work in life are the two "Godfather" movies and "Chinatown," with Frank's comment being lifted from Hyman Roth in G2. When my daughter was sixteen, I urged her

Frank, what do you put the over/under at the profit NYS will wind up making from this? Or should I ask, how many zeroes will you need to go out from the decimal point? Do we need to revisit the Aqueduct casino saga to find

Clearly some red boarding is more egregious than others. However, I've rarely seen an instance where it advances the ball in terms of the knowledge base of those perusing the message board. Invariably, it is self-congratulatory or tries to cover sins discussed before the race, but not publicly countered before the race. If that vibe gains purchase here with the masses, and is tolerated by

Richie, you’re to be commended. Determining the best of such a contentious field is the comparable inverse of making the call on Shakespeare’s best work, not simply because the field is so tightly bunched, but because you actually have to read them all to award Best of Show.

I was certain that last word was a term used by my grandfather when he thought one of his opponents in briscola was cheating, which was rather ironic since a certain form of cheating was an indigenous part of the game.

That's quite alright. I had mistakenly identified many other posts as sarcasm, only to discover to my amazement that they were actually written in earnest.

The flow chart of the thread suggests you're responding to me. If so, that would, suggest that I might need to find a way to include a "sarcasm" emoticon when I post, or probably just get new writers.

Based on what I've read here, my suggestion to management is that, in the future, they post the seminar and analysis after the race. This should insure the desired 99+% accuracy and align itself more closely with the ex post facto betting strategies, and accompanying victory dances, that always seem to crop up on the board. This might necessitate a slight reduction in pricing, but that sho

Excuse the redboard of a torn up ticket, but I was alive to SP for reasons confirmed by the ROTW analysis, and to CB for many of the reasons Frank articulated. I did not use a Pletcher-trained 3-year old racing in Florida's premiere stake race, even though he was favored on the morning line and had sufficient number power, though perhaps lacking the most attractive pattern. It was as if I

He at least paired. I could also talk about class difference in the two games, but not on this board.

In related news, preliminary talks are underway for the upstate NY track to host a future Breeders Cup.
Meanwhile, I'm still awaiting word from TGJeff about TGPS amenities for Finger Lakes. Just because parking and admission is free, doesn't mean you couldn't pay us to go to the track. Sadly, and wisely, for most, that would still not be enough.
