What about Ortiz just drawing off in the HolyBull. Why not take back and just let him run a little at the end no matter the result. For goodness sakes are they any real horsemen (trainers and jockeys both) around anymore. That race was a prep for a prep of another prep (albeit for $1 million).
There were 2 hours between the dirt races and steady head winds up to 30 mph drying the track out,

Jim, pain = 145K, big ouch and a real short squeeze but still nice payday! Super tough outside post at that distance may have been the difference. I was there yesterday and completely missed your name, paying much more attention to all the great simulcast races. We often get a pre-race status on some of the bigger races you so kindly share with us and would have been yelling loudly for you. I did

Just like technology advances all fields of endeavor, speed figures are no different and old dogmas only hold one back. Let them keep thinking certain things don't matter so we can continue to find a edge in very tough game. Beyer figs won't touch ground loss even though it's there for every one to see and 1 week suspensions given for forcing too much of it! I guess it does matte

Jerry get's a mention in this write-up of the new surface:
Also longer article from the other side of the pond that covers the whole racing surface issue and quotes Dennis Moore (track super at Santa Anita). He has very good ideas on utilizing available farm technology to better monitor the moisture in track surfaces for more consistency and safety.

It looks like real dirt versus the packed silt mix prior. NBC Sports did a piece showing the two in champagne glasses and believe she stated it was sourced around the LAX area. Compares more visually to the Oaklawn Park surface made of real farm type earth which has more inherent cushion and the hope of less injuries. I am sure it will be tightened down somewhat and especially for Breeders Cup.

Per Steve Haskin:
In addition to the victory, what made trainer Christophe Clement happy and proud was the fact that Tonalist was only one of two horses in the field, along with Wicked Strong, to have a clean medication list going into the race.
“I went on the New York State Racing and Wagering Board website to see what every trainer was treating their horses with leading up to the race,” Cle

Racing is always upside down and one of the most archaic enterprises around, a total bizarro world of some of the worst management and cronyism to exist.
Churchill Downs runs a racetrack (Calder) as a casino and not well at that.
Why not have a real casino operator run a racetrack, yes it is about a profit but they know how to take care of their customer. Obviously the longer the bettor stays i

1st race Friday: Ward has Sunset Glow:
"Sunset Glow won a really beautiful race at Belmont on Friday, she's a really hardy filly and she will go for the Albany Stakes. I don't think the trip will take any toll on her. In fact, she may even improve."

Hey, he did get a 2 month vacation in Florida this winter which we would all like. More so younger horses and fillies/mares that D Wayne used up in similar fashion, but he has always had owners who want to run and win not breeders who want to space efforts and preserve their horses. So blame the owners as well. This horse has a history of throwing in clinkers and always bouncing back so based on

Right thoughts, wrong approach. Space the Triple Crown races 4 weeks apart, then the Haskell 4 weeks later followed by the Travers 4 weeks later. 5 races in 5 months to determine 3 yr old of the year. Points for participation and performance.
The Triple Crown format changed several times before the existing set up.
Spacing is more fair for the horses and current training/racing patterns.

Agree on that last work for Tonalist, his workmate Life in Shambles (stakes placed in 4 starts - 2nd in Sir Barton at Pimlico) had to be restrained down the lane as to not overtake him while Tonalist was under encouragement, even after starting out several lengths in front. Obviously not the strongest worker if Clement felt the need to give him company but not how I like my horses to move in the

JB can you tell us why Beyer is not interested in this component? Speaking of track and field, wind aided results are disallowed for record setting.

a I had cashed nicely on Big Brown in the Derby so I booked a trip for the Belmont even getting the last grandstand seats through NYRA at the top of the stretch before they quickly sold out. It was my first visit back to NY since 1989, I had worked and lived at Belmont for several meets in the late Eighties. I remember the heat was stifling and they closed off the bathrooms after shutting off th

At 9-5 Funny Cide was no gift but towered over the field. The clincher for me was Santo's motivation to show the horse and rider were both legit and that he wasn't carrying a device as erroneously reported first by the Miami Herald based on a blurry photo. IF he had saved something in reserve instead of winning by the 3rd largest margin (9 3/4 lengths) in Preakness history, the tank m

Background below on the early use of the Flair product, as an aside I do know the cough which Chrome has it most likely allergies to the dust in his hay, often occurring when introduced to a change in hay when he shipped. In the late 80' we used wood shavings instead to keep the dust down and they are still widely used today.

Chrome had heel issues and changed to padded shoes, but this occurred after the 1st jump up in December. It certainly has helped prevent any setbacks or training delays. Per DRF
CYPRESS, Calif. -- With white hooves on all four feet, Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome always has needed a little extra attention to hoof care, and his trainer, Art Sherman, said blacksmith Judd Fisher came

Funny Cide was rank and over the top, he ran off in his last 3 furlong work days before the Belmont, was washy in the post parade, would not relax for Santos and was on the engine for the race. Credible third and behind a rested and bred for the distance Empire Maker and Ten Most Wanted who went on the capture the Travers that year. Look for any any bloom of the rose for CC as a tell.

As of 2 years ago they were banned:
New York is the only state that bans nasal strip use. The prohibition does not come from the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, which approved their use in October 1999 and allows nasal strips to be used in Standardbred racing.
The strips have been banned at New York Racing Association tracks at the discretion of stewards under a one-sentence, catc

No specifics and there is no easy answer here but some general observations:
Learn from your mistakes and adjust accordingly (let those hard lessons guide you forward), trust your instincts and as Jerry and others have stated, match your opinions to your wagers when they offer value to you. In other words, you define value, not others who determine the actual odds.

Repost from earlier and the one chink in his armor:
Thomas on California Chrome:
California Chrome has the pattern of motion of an older horse. His running style really has not changed at all since his debut last April at Hollywood Park, but it has become much more powerful.
He breaks from the gate, seeks to get into the clear toward the front of the pack, platforms at a high cruising

Don't feel bad, someone in know tossed him too. Per Steve Haskin's derby wrap-up on bloodhorse:
Even a skeptic like Dale Romans, trainer of Medal Count, is now a believer. “I didn’t think that California Chrome had any chance going into this race and I was very, very wrong,” he said. “Whether the crop is a good crop or not, that’s a special horse. I was wrong. I was a very big skept

Can you provide his comments on Chrome? I didn't anticipate that clean of a trip from the inside post as he received. He did throw his head up once down the stretch the first time but settled in and relaxed on the turn. The other riders didn't race ride him even with the bullseye (jackass) on his back. Their loss, seems to me he has to be made very uncomfortable for some length of ti
