Still plenty of deserving horses, but they don't sign the checks. That's racing these days. Mellon commissioned statues of flesh and blood horses (including at

"Sentiment needs to be checked at the door. When you enter the ring, you know that's the risk you run. Wide World of Sports -- the agony of defeat. That's endemic to all sports."
Second this! Cue Kipling and all those other now politically incorrect bastards.

Donnie Baseball and Keith belong among those all-time who-was-better NYC baseball player debates. But I have never seen anyone come close to Hernandez as a first baseman. Back when bunting was still in vogue, Hernandez made it almost impossible to advance a runner. He would field bunts on the third base side. Never saw anything like it.

Privman on Twitter said the 1-hole will be left open in a 19-horse field. Who'd a thunk it? Logic prevails.

As Rich Curtis suggested, racing seems to have trouble distinguishing between a lifeline and a noose.
Thought you all might like to know that PETA's laudatory statement from March 15th (below) has now been deleted from its site.
It's one thing for Belinda to have been played for a sap, but the Jockey Club really should have known better.

Say what you will about synthetics, one thing it most certainly did not fail at was reducing the rate of catastrophic equine injuries (which is

It's always fun to see what non-racing people will get wrong when they write about racing:
"Nonetheless, the Triple Crown races are marketed as a unified entity by Triple Crown Productions, and many of the same horses compete in all three races."
I guess that would depend on your definition of "many".

While I agree with Fairmount about Lasix/dehydration leading to fewer starts, one would also think that the associated weight loss would - if anything - reduce the stress of racing, not increase it.
Would also agree with your points re Europe (slow early / fast late) vs US (the opposite, turf excepted). That was probably the biggest reason why many bettors hated synth - it seemed to turn speed

Any horseplayer who isn't deeply concerned that Belinda Stronach is now the most influential person in American racing needs to have their head examined.

And here's how that quote was followed up on PETA's Twitter account:
"Racing must go the way of the animal circus, but this will eliminate some of the misery of its way out."

Given the setting I'll add a "fwiw", but Winx's best Timeform rating last year (134) was equivalent to Gun Runner's Pegasus and Enable's Arc.
Throw in her "Oh, what the hell! I'll just wait all day then loop the field again" style, and you gotta believe her TGs would be ok.

Well, it's somewhat understandable for such a thing to happen in Tennessee (no horse racing or casinos).

Thanks. Wasn't talking about whether or not he would be a serious contender or the effects of pace on the JCGC result. It's just that, from what I read, if he is doing OK (the horse needs to get off the vet list because he apparently tied up after the race), the plan was to race him in the Classic and then retire him.

It was great to hang out for a while with such a choice selection of Spa TGenerates. And very nice to finally meet up with the well-traveled Fairmount. Good to run into you again later down at the paddock (before the big race, getting a look at the big horse). You are the kind of guy who makes going to the racetrack fun, and I look forward to seeing you up at the Spa and elsewhere.

Wasn't following racing in those days, but - on account of a weekly basketball game TGJB and I both played in - I do remember that Alysheba was the TG play in that Derby.
How ABC happened to have an Iso on the 8-1 winner is another 30-year-old story.
