A knowledgable fellow I follow on Twitter believes this is explained by a quirk in the will-pays related to a scratch in the finale that occurred after the start of the sequence. Basically, the will-pays treat all runners as a potential favorite, and therefore add in the bets on the scratched horse to every horse's pool. This results in all of the will-pays appearing lower than what they wou

3rd paragraph of the article. That is the maximum fine that NJ stewards can levy. They asked the state to levy heftier additional fines.

There must be a reason why the Grand Slam has - outside of the two quinella pools - the lowest handle of any bet on the NYRA menu ($45K yesterday).
Don't know what happened with the Omni other than that it died in infancy.

My memory of the Giacomo Derby here on the TG board was that no one cashed with the exception of one guy - he went by davidrex, I think - who liked Closing Argument and wheeled him up and down with maybe 8 other horses, including the top 4 finishers of the SA Derby. I think the exacta paid 8 grand or thereabouts. Anybody know what happened to davidrex? JB?

As with lots of scandals, the scandal in racing is "what's legal".

The irony in that comment is that - for many years - there was no Sunday racing in England even though there was such racing in the presumably more-religious Ireland.

In the event of field horses getting into the first two (or more) top spots, they will pay out to the highest-finishing non-field horse.

Frank, I was referring only to the "single season" thing cited. Lefty was just a pup on those great Cardinal teams, and 5 of his 6 20-win seasons were with the Phillies (admittedly, not a bad bunch most of those years).
Still, when you go 27-10 in 41 starts, and your team plays like the '62 Mets in their other 121 games, that's a hell of a year.
And, contrary to Pedro, L

Dead on, JB.
What used to kill me about the whole "NL vs AL" thing (I've always been more of an AL guy) was that - while I always agreed the the DH was an abomination - I always hated that the NL was so dominated by artificial turf teams (this is the 70s an

As one of those older gents I would nominate Carlton's 27-10 in 1972, with a terrible Phillies team that won only 59 games. There are lots of great single seasons out there, though.

What added to Pedro's greatness was that he was just so much fun to watch. When you see great players actually enjoying themselves out there, it's just the cherry on the sundae. He was a gas.

Right you are, HP, so I'll sign off with this one. I wanted pretty much the same thing that Lassie did, only, rather than beef, more cheese on the set.

So says the Daily News.
Andy gets 8 appointments, including the chair. Silver (no, not THAT Silver) and Skelos get 2 each, and NYRA gets 5. The horsemen and breeders get 1 each, nonvoting. No seats for those who pay the freight.
Same 3-year time frame as previously reported. Expected to pass before the session ends on Thursday. Oh, boy.

Also possible that he has been sent here from the planet Zarooloo, to destroy our favorite equine sport and also to abscond with some of our best-looking women, to have them live out their days as Zaroolooan cocktail waitresses, though I kinda doubt it.

A court-ordered "Integrity Counsel" is fired by NYRA in early 2011. They deliver their report to NYRA's board anyway, citing new findings and concerns. The NYRA board barely summons up enough energy to ignore the report for a whole year, and now they are trying to prevent said "Integrity Counsel" from releasing the report to the state and the public, citing attorney-clien

This town long ago buried racetracks nicer than Aqueduct, so if it needs to die so that Saratoga and Belmont might thrive, I'll go to the funeral with dry eyes. But I would hate to see Belmont butchered for the sake of winter racing. If NY racing is going to have to eventually stand on its own (once the casino deal is done, say by '14), it should not have to have the NY Breeders and the

Lord knows I've been defending this guy here for weeks, so I think I'm entitled to this one. I know he's referring to Mario, but, given Mike Smith's recent history, this line would have been much deeper and more resonant had he substituted the gender-neutral pronoun "one" for "him".

The blimp shot really showed what a great ride Gutierrez gave him. They were all by their lonesomes just galloping along. And I thought that was super classy for a young jock like that to give a shout out to the grooms, with some of the first words out of his mouth as a derby winner.

I may be kicking myself in a couple of hours Michael because I pretty much concur about Union Rags, including that the 9/2 is fair. But it's so easy to see him getting jammed up in the first turn or going 5W late, that I just can't pull the trigger on it. Instead, I'm just scaling this back to a smallish Derby bet, using Rags, but making Sabercat my "jump up" key. Good lu

Miff, today you are the embodiment of cluelessness.
You think the Times has four racing reporters?
Further, if you think a bunch of vets, trainers and owners is going to laugh this guy out of any room, I'll book that bet. If you think Drape is the one driving this bus, you're wrong again.
Full disclosure: I work at the Times, on the business side of things
