Because of unsoundness, Animal Kingdom, the winner of the 2011 Derby, has run only one allowance race since, and this week he was benched again for at least three months while he recovers from a stress fracture. Already this year some of the most promising young aspirants for the 2012 Triple Crown have been sidelined by stress fractures. And there by the wayside along with them are all the reform

First to Jimbo, thanks very much for the kind words re: At the Races. I try to keep everyone upbeat, informed and entertained with ATR, and it's satisfying to know it's appreciated.
My stance with Allday Tuesday and then with Satish Wednesday, as JB seems to echo, is that the press release felt slapdash, and fashioned without any attempt to gain unification of purpose industry-wide.

In addition to all those very apparent explanations, add in that last year's opener was on a Saturday.

jimbo,
Take a close look at Jeff Bonde's Ancient Title winner, Smiling Tiger. Has that '3yo in the SPR' look about him and the synth2dirt move upon which to rely. It's odd how this never-off-board/dual G1 winner has gone pretty much without notice. Has been brilliantly handled by Bonde, will arrive two weeks ahead of start, and should be poised for Churchill.

So disingenuous... The sale format is completely different from last year.. a fact that has been well documented but must not have reached your rarified, high-rolling air.
Through 4 sessions year to year:
2009: 703 sold, AVG. $167,368; MED. $110,000 (B/B 35%)
2010: 527 sold, AVG. $181,131; MED. $120,000 (B/B 32%)
Any other misinformation you want to spread?
And JC, congrats on the

Gov. Jones' filly had surgery to remove a small mass that was in her intestine. She is reportedly doing well and working her way back. Can't say if she can return in time for Oaks however...

Well, you got your answer... One of their first moves was taking Court Vision from Mott this week and delivering him to Dutrow.

Didn't mean to be flippant but I'd much rather see that leg at GG be a 6 horse field of real ALW horses than a 10 horse $10k/N2L field. And the GP, SA and LRL legs have been so solid and difficult that a breather in the sequence is a welcome necessity. Given the fun, innovation and success of this concept, I thought it was a bit petty to teeth-gnash over one leg having a short

Wow.. So in other words, the 2 of you have hit EVERY WEEK for the $26,350, $6,100, $12,450 and $9,900 payoffs during the first 4 Magna 5's because the GG leg has been a formful, smaller field ALW! That's remarkable... Congratulations!

Not trying to be a smartass, but it's Evan Shipman, the brilliant Morning Telegraph writer and poet who was a close friend of Hemingway and one of the few inner circle subjects in 'A Movable Feast' treated warmly. Shipman's work is most easily accessible in pre-1950 editions of the American Racing Manual where he preceded Charles Hatton as lead biographer of 'Ho

Barry,
If this is 'the difference between journalism in the real world, as opposed to horse racing', where has the 'real world journalism' been on reporting of the fraud Bloomberg and NYC-OTB is foisting on NY State, the NY breeders, NYRA and the horseplayers? Funny that only DRF's Matt Hegarty and Steve Crist, and NOT the mainstream press, have accurately portrayed th

I agree with EJXD that Wednesday's card was fun, challenging and very playable. Just look at the 4th where Lion's Maddy was sent off as juicy overlay or the 6th where Bomber D Back was shockingly underbet.
Realize too that many outfits are looking to get their juvy a start before the end of the year ("ran at 2") or a win ("won at 2") or black type (Ca

Would have liked him to let Alexandros at least take a run at Giant Moon/Spanky Fischbein today. Rig seemed eager to be let out a notch or two on backstretch and Coa kept him in a 6-5... May still not have been better than third there but at least let the horse try.

PLETCHER ASSIGNMENTS:
Garrett Gomez: Any Given Saturday.
Edgar Prado: Scat Daddy
John Velazquez: Circular Quay
Fernando Jara: Cowtown Cat
Ramon Dominguez: Sam P.
I guess Chris DeCarlo only gets to ride Pletcher 'B' horses in minor stakes..

DRex/Tony,
That was a very good day? What exactly was good about it?
The cooked racing surface?
Or the ridiculous outcomes that rendered any late-running or non-TAP entrant moot?
(Not to mention Bright One being put down?)
I suppose it could be interpreted as a very good day if you did well at the windows, but I'm sorry... this was NOT a very good day OF racing or FOR racing.
